PMAY-G explained: rural housing scheme, eligibility and how it works

By Ravi Prakash · Updated 14 June 2026 · 8 min read

Quick answer

What PMAY-G is

PMAY-G stands for Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin, the rural part of the national housing mission. It replaced the older Indira Awaas Yojana in 2016. The aim is simple: help rural families who live in kutcha or unsafe houses move into a solid, permanent home.

People also search for it as PM Awas Yojana Gramin, awaas yojana, gramin housing scheme or simply awas list. They all point to the same scheme.

How much help you get

The assistance is paid in instalments directly into the beneficiary's bank account as the house is built. The indicative amounts are around 1.20 lakh rupees in plain areas and about 1.30 lakh rupees in hilly, difficult or special-category areas. These figures are revised by the government, so confirm the current amount on the official portal.

It is more than just the house money

PMAY-G is linked with other schemes. You can get unskilled labour days under MGNREGA for building your own house, toilet support under the Swachh Bharat Mission, and help with a gas, electricity and water connection.

Who is eligible

Eligibility is decided from official survey data, not by a simple online form. Families are identified using deprivation data and the Awaas Plus survey, then the list is verified and approved by the Gram Sabha so the village agrees on who genuinely needs a house.

  • Rural households without a pucca house, or living in one or two kutcha rooms.
  • Families that appear in the official survey and pass the exclusion checks.
  • Priority for the most deprived, including SC, ST and others as per the scheme rules.
No one can sell you a spot

Selection is rule-based and approved in the Gram Sabha. Nobody can add your name for a fee. If anyone asks for money to put you on the list, report it.

The 2024 expansion

In 2024 the government approved a large number of additional houses to be built over the following years, which is why fresh surveys and updated lists have been appearing. If you were left out earlier, the updated survey is your chance to be considered.
