What the scheme is
MGNREGA is the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. It started in 2006 as NREGA and was renamed in 2009 in honour of Mahatma Gandhi. People also call it manrega, narega or simply nrega. In Maharashtra the same idea runs as the Rojgar Hami Yojana.
The core promise is simple. Every rural household whose adults are willing to do unskilled manual work has a legal right to a fixed number of days of paid work each financial year, close to home.
In December 2025 Parliament passed the VB-G RAM G Act, which is set to replace MGNREGA and raise the guarantee to 125 days. We explain it in plain language in a separate guide.
